Being inexperienced, I’ve found the best way to capture fireworks is to play with the camera settings, take lots of photos, and hope for the best. I managed to pick a few (out of the hundreds I took) that actually resembled fireworks.
This was a fantastic fireworks show in St Ives, Cambridgeshire; also known as the Hemingford Fireworks. I go every year and would certainly recommend it (not the hot dogs though… the hot dogs were bad).
The Flash Player and a browser with Javascript support are needed..
